Raising Deaf Kids- Hard of hearing, Hearing Loss, Sign Language, ASL, Listening and Spoken Language, Hearing Impaired

Are you tired of spending your precious time after the kids go to bed googling and scrolling Instagram for answers, like “How do I learn sign language?” Do you feel overwhelmed by all of the decisions that you have to constantly make for your child? Do you dream about a day where you can just enjoy your family without worrying about language access or IEP goals? Hey! I’m Alaine Iacobs and I’m so glad we found each other on the Raising Deaf Kids podcast! I remember what it felt like to learn that my child was Deaf for the first time. It felt like the rug got torn out from under my feet and I was falling without a net in sight. It was hard for me to accept that my child was Deaf at first. And then came the overwhelm of all of the decisions that the professionals asked me to make when my baby was just 2 months old. How did I get through those crazy early years of learning new ways of life without completely going insane? By creating solid foundations for my child of communication strategies, academic skills and routines at home along with a rock solid faith in the Lord who guided all of my steps. The podcast will feature tactical ways to build language skills for your child, a no- sweat approach to starting the IEP process, stories from other moms who have been in your shoes, and advice from trusted experts in the field to help you make decisions that are right for your child and your family. Together we are going to build a strong foundation that will support your child and help them thrive! You can be confident that you are making the right decisions for your child and also be able to show up for the rest of your family and yourself. So put down that ASL app and ling 6 toys for now, and let’s get started!

I’ve been talking to a lot of parents lately who feel a lot of guilt about either late identifying their deaf or hard of hearing child, or not giving their child enough language sooner.

I know this journey with hearing loss was probably not what you expected and there have been a lot of challenges along the way.

I want to talk today about why we are feeling this guilt and what you can do to release the guilt today to parent your child with more clarity and confidence.

Today I’m going to talk about a concern that came up in a parent community that I was a part of last week.

The parent was concerned that their child was no longer interested in using ASL to communicate and wanted to know if this was OK, and how to help their child continue learning ASL.

In this episode we are going to talk about why taking a break from signing is not a problem for your child, and what you can do to continue to support your child’s language skills during this time.

Do you want to create a more intentional home in 2024? Do you crave more balance and ease at home and are you ready to create home foundations that support your entire family?

Today on the podcast I have Kathryn Garland who talks with me about how to become a home MAKER instead of just fumbling along in the house day-to-day.

Kathryn lives with her husband and 4 kids on their farm in British Columbia, Canada. She is a former teacher and now homeschools her 4 kids. Kathryn’s mission and purpose is to help people see the power of the home and the possibilities that come from creating a safe and grounded home.

She is the host of the podcast Homespun: Create the Life You Crave, which is available on Apple podcasts and Spotify.

Kathryn has really good insight into the idea of home making as a verb. Something that you intentionally do and create in your home, and us women are in a unique position to truly create a special space that is supportive, educational and fun for every member of the family.

Creating a home foundation is so important to raising deaf kids as our kids go through a lot outside of our walls, and making the inside of our home as supportive and accessible for our kids as possible helps them to better cope with the pressures of the outside world. In this episode Kathryn shares her journey in home MAKING and we chat about rules and chores we set for our kids and how we add in daily self care for ourselves as well.

I can say with confidence that finding a community of supportive parents was a game changer for me as far as building my confidence in talking to our providers and creating our own communication plans for our family as well.
